Introduction
Not everyone has the skills or the time to build a sofa from scratch. However, you can take an existing piece of furniture and modify it to suit your needs. The easy method is to add some new pillows and maybe a cover. Everyone does that, but I’m going for something different today: I want to transform my basic couch into a bed. To do this, we’ll use eggcrate foam because it’s cheap and easy to work with. It doesn’t hurt that it makes for a good-looking sofa bed surface!
Cut the Foam
- Use a ruler to measure the width of your foam and mark it with a sharp knife, then use the same technique to mark off the height.
- Cut along those lines with a sharp blade (or scissors if you want to be more precise). This can get messy! If you don’t have any clean rags on hand, an old t-shirt is just fine—it’s okay if they get stained with foam dust in this process because they’re going to be covered up anyway.
Cut Out Pleats
- Using your ruler and utility knife, cut out pleats in the foam. The width of each pleat should be about 1/2″ wide and the length should be at least 2″.
- Now you’re ready to sew! If you’re looking for advice on how to sew, check out [this page](https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Foam-Sofa-Bed/) for a full tutorial on sewing foam with piping or [this page](https://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_Sew_Couch_Cushions/) for general instructions on sewing cushions (including piping).
Make 3 Parts and Sew Them Together
- Sew the pleated foam to the flat foam.
- Sew the flat foam to the cover (make sure you’re sewing it right-side out).
- Sew the cover to your newly created pleated/flat foam sandwich!
Cover
Now that you have your foam, you need to cover it. I used a fabric that was easy to clean and comfortable, but what’s best for you may be different. Make sure your cover is the right size for your foam. If it’s too big or too small, not only will you be uncomfortable sitting on it or laying down on it, but it won’t look right either!
Remember: if your pleats are uneven you will have an uneven sofa bed, especially in the middle.
Remember: if your pleats are uneven you will have an uneven sofa bed, especially in the middle. If you want a straight sofa bed, then make sure your pleats are even. If you want a crooked sofa bed, then make sure they’re uneven!
Conclusion
This is a simple and fun project to do, especially for a child’s birthday party or an art class. It will give everyone something to do after they have finished their food! The best part is that it can be easily adapted if you want to make more than one sofa bed out of this design. For example, you might want two pieces of solid colored foam instead of one with stripes, or the same material used on all three parts. You could also add buttons or other decorations before sewing everything together so that it looks even better when finished!
