Introduction

If you’re looking for a quick, easy project to do at home, look no further than Big Foam Letters! Our expanding foam tape is an easy-to-use product that will help you create the exact letters or shapes of your choice.

We have made it even easier by providing instructions on how to make these letters yourself at home. Check out our blog post below for detailed instructions on how to make your own big foam letters!

Instructions

  • Use a utility knife to cut out the letters. Cut along all four sides of the box, leaving a bit of extra room for error in case you don’t get it right the first time around.
  • Mask off the edges for clean line definition, especially if you want to paint over them later on (like we did). If you want to use expanding foam tape on smaller surfaces (such as walls), then masking isn’t necessary and can be removed after expansion is complete by simply peeling off or brushing away excess foam with a wet sponge or brush (the option for using expanding foam tape directly on walls).
  • Spray your favorite color of spray paint onto each letter! You can apply multiple coats if needed, but one coat should be enough for most projects). To prevent overspray from getting everywhere and ruining other surfaces nearby like furniture, clothes etc., make sure there aren’t loose pieces of paper stuffed inside which could catch some momentum when sprayed with paint; otherwise those pieces will fly everywhere and make quite a mess too! Also keep in mind that as soon as they are dry they won’t stick anymore so don’t forget this crucial step before putting up posters if that’s your plan 🙂

Step 1: Materials- You will need the following materials:

  • Expanding Foam Tape (2)
  • Spray Paint (4)
  • Expanding Foam Can (1)
  • Expanding Foam Gun (1)
  • Spray Gun Nozzle (1)

Step 2: Cut out the letters.

The second step is to cut out the letters. There are several ways to do this, but they all work on the same basic principle: mark where you want to make your cuts, then use a utility knife or saw to cut through the foam.

  • Marking with a Sharpie: If you’re using a Sharpie marker, it’s important that whatever surface you’re marking on (your floor or table) has some tooth so that the ink doesn’t slide around when it’s time for cutting. You also want to make sure no one puts their drinks on that spot during this process—or at least not until after all of your cuts are complete!
  • Using a compass: If you have an old compass lying around from high school geometry class (or already have one from doing these steps yourself), now’s its chance in the spotlight! A compass can make quick work of marking circles and triangles as long as you know where exactly in space those shapes will fall.
  • Using stencils: Stencils are often used in painting projects because they allow artists who might not be able to draw freehand lines (like me) much more precision than other methods would offer them without additional effort expended by hand each time they need to re-draw their lines over again after making changes later down the line; however, I found them challenging because sometimes there are “bumps” between sections where sections meet each other due either via irregularity in shape placement or imperfections caused by cutting patterns being overlapped during assembly stages–both meant my stenciled designs differed slightly from how they ended up looking when done manually.”””

Step 3: Mask off the edges for clean line definition- We do this a number of different ways.

Now that you have your foam letters, it’s time to put them on the wall.

Depending on what look you want, there are many ways to mask off your edges. We’ve used everything from masking tape, painter’s tape and painter’s blue tape, to masking paper and plastic.

But our favorite method of all is using painters’ cloths for creating clean lines around the edges of our foam letters! You can find these in most hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s for only a few dollars per sheet!

Step 4: Foam the letters.

The next step is to foam the letters. This can be done with a foam brush, foam applicator, or foam roller.

Keep in mind that you will want to apply the foam in a thin coat and wait until it dries before adding more layers (unless using our expanding foam tape).

Step 5: Expanding foam tape is a long time adhesive that can hold heavy objects on any surface.

Expanding foam tape is a long time adhesive that can hold heavy objects on any surface. It’s great for securing wood to other substrates like concrete or brick. Expanding foam paint is an alternative to traditional spray foam for smaller projects. The paint comes in various colors and it expands quickly when applied on the surface with a brush or roller and dries very fast which makes it ideal for large surfaces or multiple coats! Spray kits are an easy way to get started with expanding foams like Big Foam Letters and many other projects where you want precise control over the amount of expansion while also providing easily cut lines when needed by using our tool kit included in most kits!
