The morning shed phenomenon has taken the Internet by storm, with hundreds of millions of views on TikTok videos of people removing layers of beauty products and sleep-boosting treatments. The trend claims that the uglier you go to bed, the prettier you wake up, but experts are sounding the alarm on the potential harm of this trend. Some influencers, like Devon Kelley, claim that the morning shed improves their sleep quality, but experts are divided on the issue. Dr Alanna Hare, a consultant in respiratory medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital, warns that there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that mouth taping improves sleep quality. Sleep apnoea is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when a person’s airway is blocked, causing them to stop breathing for short periods during the night. Dr Hare warns that mouth taping could worsen sleep apnoea in some people, particularly those who have nasal obstruction. Nasal obstruction is a common cause of sleep apnoea. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including nasal polyps, deviated septum, and enlarged tonsils. Dr Hare suggests that if you have a chronically blocked nose, you should see a specialist ear, nose and throat doctor as they can help determine the underlying cause and recommend treatment. So, what are the risks of mouth taping? According to Dr Hare, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that mouth taping improves sleep quality. In fact, she warns that mouth taping could worsen sleep apnoea in some people.
