Introduction

Using a variety of tools and products, we took some old foam board that was being thrown out at a local art school and turned it into fun wall hangings by applying decals. Here’s how we did it:

Select to decal to use – You can purchase a decal sheet and apply that to foam board or you can individually cut out a design to apply.

First, you will need to measure out the foam board and make sure it is the correct size. A good rule of thumb is that you should use one decal for every three square inches of surface area. If you are applying an entire sheet of decals, then it’s important that they cover the entire area of your board (or at least as close as possible).

Cut out the individual decal you want to use or if you are applying a whole sheet, measure the foam board and make sure it is cut it to the correct size.

When you are applying decals to foam board, it is important to measure the board before cutting out individual decals. If you are applying a whole sheet of decals for your project, measure the foamboard and make sure it is cut it to the correct size. You may use a ruler or X-acto knife for this task.

Clean the foam board first and then prepare your decal. Make sure you remove any bubbles and staple holes so that when you apply the decal you can get a smooth application.

  • Use a dry lint roller to remove any dust from the surface of foam board or vinyl sticker sheets.
  • Spray or wipe down the surface with water (not too much!) to gently remove any dust on its surface, then let it dry for about 10 minutes before moving on to step 2 below.

Apply your decal using the company’s instructions. If using Mod Podge, follow the directions listed on the can for application.

Next, you’ll need to apply the decals. Most products come with directions for application, and they should be followed to a tee. The most important thing is to make sure that you don’t apply too much Mod Podge or the decal won’t adhere well. You can use a paintbrush or a sponge brush (or even your fingers) if you want more precise control over where the glue goes — just make sure that whatever tool you use is clean and dry before applying it!

Finish with the appropriate amount of coats of Mod Podge Gloss, Light Satin or Matte spray depending on the look you would like your product to have.

When applying the Mod Podge, you have a few options. You can use a spray bottle, foam brush, paint brush, foam roller or sponge roller and more!

You can also use an old piece of foam board if you want to try with no commitment.

Use several coats of Mod Podge Gloss, Light Satin or Matte spray as desired to protect your piece from moisture and dust to ensure your new creation lasts a lifetime.

Once you’ve applied all the Mod Podge, you can let it dry for about an hour and then start applying your decals. I used a foam brush to apply my decals because I wanted them to be as smooth as possible. The more coats of Mod Podge you use, the smoother everything will look!

Conclusion

We hope these tips make your project go more smoothly and that you have fun making foam board decals for any of your projects.
